emirates

so, i was on my way to indonesia sunday evening, when things went horribly awry at JFK (which has now had its official second chance and is thus permanently shitlisted). after much sprinting and talking on the phone, i ended up with a much longer itinerary than my original flight (52 hours vs 32 hours. yum! dc-nyc-hamburg-dubai-colombo-singapore-jakarta-hotel-yogyakarta) i was also switched to emirates airways, which was pretty nice, and there are two things that i wanted to record before i forget:

the ceiling of our 777 had stars when it got dark - little twinkly pinholes. it was lovely. and the lighted panels around the edges had twilight and dusk settings - they were dark (with their own stars), then they went to twilight dark tealblue, then they turned pinkish before coming up slowly. like the sun!

i got lucky, and they had extra vegetarian meals for me several times. but i saw on the list that they have Jain meals available. next time i fly emirates (which will hopefully not be for quite a while, as i can't imagine getting back on a plane), i'm going to have to request Jain meals, just to see what they're like. only year-old dried fruits and nuts? am very curious (and probably very ignorant, yo)....
