federal holidays are my favorite thing
just a few months back, i was working and even having meetings on saturdays, sundays, and some major holidays. now, i get about one 3-day weekend EVERY MONTH! love this town.
today i accomplished the only goal i set for the day: visit a museum. i went to the Hirshhorn to see the Hiroshi Sugimoto exhibit. his work is amazing. i forgot to have coffee before going to the museum, so i was really stressed by the crowds (seriously considered slugging one woman after her third offense). but his work was so pure and calming that i survived. i will go back on a weekday. more sugimoto photos here, here, and here. there was also a room showing the films of hiraki sawa. the writeup doesn't do them justice.
after i decided that coffee could be delayed NO LONGER, i went next door to air&space, which has a food court. and whoa, the teeming masses vastly prefer air&space to the hirshhorn. and then i started marvelling at the differences in the crowds - couples with the solo screaming kid at the hirshhorn, and parents who hang out with the other adults and lets the group of obnoxious kids push people out of the way at air&space.but don't worry, eventually i got some coffee and quit being so vicious.
