fireflies

when i lived in madison, i thought it was very sad that the city lights had made life so hard for fireflies. there were some fireflies, but not very many - compared to dark places i had lived before. but DC is MUCH brighter than madison, and also has more fireflies. TONS of fireflies. almost every evening, a firefly rides me into the house. (this is why it's good that i can't get one of my window screens back in - spontaneous firefly liberation). so, the sparse madison firefly population is probably due to cooler madison temperatures - in DC, we have crowds of cucarachas and hordes of other 6-leggers, so i suppose, likewise, fireflies thrive despite the light.
