new friends!

in the two weeks i've had this remarkably short, uneven haircut, very few of my friends and associates have mentioned it. only one girl at the office said "whoa, short hair". only b and the two j's in madison said ANYTHING. and only one dc friend mentioned it - of the 20 or so i've hung out with recently.

BUT, the interesting part is that black folks i barely know have gone out of their way to tell me how much they like it. 6 people in two days! three were people i know vaguely, and three were people whose names i didn't even know. one woman interrupted her conversation to stop me at the watercooler and compliment my great hair. another walked out of her way to come touch it. and even mr. taylor at the door remarked on my great new style.

it's really very nice. i'm making new friends. and it's giving me back the courage compliment black women on their awesome, awesome hairdos (once, a woman flew off the handle when i said i liked her hair, and i have been hesitant since. but now i'm reassured that she was just crazy!).
